The Context

I Play the Fox is a narrator of stories for the popular tabletop role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), the role is known as a Dungeon Master in the D&D community. They are paid to host and describe interactive stories that participants can play in, which changes actively based on their actions as the story builds. I Play the Fox wanted a brand with some playful trickery that is in their story-telling style.  This is why I proposed that their business cards come in the form of a poker deck, which has a playful association from playing games but also has a subtle connection to trickery in card tricks.

Logo

The logo is based off of the 20-sided dice, known in the D&D community as a d20, it is an iconic aspect of Dungeons & Dragons because it determines whether the person playing the game will succeed at a given task. 20 is typically the best possible outcome, and on the other side the 1 is the worst. The logo combines a d20 to emphasize that I Play The Fox is a D&D dungeon master, and adds minimal shapes to imply that it is also a fox.

The Challenges

The challenge was that there are many Dungeon Masters. We needed this card to stand out and have a lot of personality if someone who is looking for a new game had a stack of business cards to choose from. Not only was this card set an irregular size for business cards, it was thicker and had an entirely different poker-card texture.

The Results

They wanted some reference to common themes they like to use in stories, in a playful and mischievous manner that hints at playing games and a little bit of trickery. This unique approach, combined with the photos around the contact information for a feel of what the customer could expect from games with I Play The Fox, made the cards stand out.
